Dr Mathieu Assal has special expertise in surgery of traumatic and nontraumatic disorders of the foot, ankle and lower extremity. An internationally acclaimed expert in the field, Dr Mathieu Assal is the author of 82 peer-reviewed scientific papers and 16 book chapters, 115 scientific posters, inventor of 6 surgical innovations, and researcher in numerous clinical trials. He is a progressive-thinking surgeon who frequently lectures at top national and international meetings. He is enthusiastic about mentoring residents and fellows and regularly teaches at leading surgical courses. Dr Mathieu Assal holds three prestigious positions:

  • President of the Swiss Foot and Ankle Society;
  • Chairman of the Swiss AO Advanced Trauma Course in Davos, Switzerland.
  • Chairman of the European Federation Orthopaedies and Traumatology (EFORT), Instructional Course, Foot & Ankle Surgery, Advanced in Lausanne, Switzerland.
  • Chairman European Master Course in Trauma (Graz 2016)

Dr Mathieu Assal was born and raised in Geneva, Switzerland, and received his MD from the University of Geneva in 1994. He completed his formal Orthopaedic and Trauma training in Geneva in 1999 before specializing in lower extremity surgery. His acquired passion for Foot and Ankle Surgery and Traumatology led him to undertake a 2-year fellowship (from 2000-2002) at one of the premier foot and ankle and trauma centers in the United States, the Sigvard Hansen Institute at Harborview Medical Center, University of Washington, Seattle, USA. In this position he was heavily involved in outpatient care, surgery, and research.

 

Prior to establishing the Foot and Ankle Center at Clinique La Colline, Dr Mathieu Assal served as chief of both the Foot and Ankle and Orthopaedic Infection Units at the University Hospitals of Geneva from 2002‐2012. Through this decade Dr Mathieu Assal was appointed "Médecin adjoint agrégé du chef de service"(Associate Professor) and obtained the distinguished academic title of "Privat‐Docent" (PD) at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Geneva.

 

Dr Mathieu Assal is highly skilled in all areas of foot, ankle and lower extremity disorders, including minimally invasive surgery, trauma, sports injuries, foot and ankle reconstruction, ankle arthroplasty (joint replacement), infection, and foot complications secondary to diabetes. He is up‐to‐date with the latest developments in orthopaedic surgery particularly in his area of special expertise, continues to participate in research, and is a strong proponent of critical thinking so as to ensure his practice is consistently based upon reliable scientific evidence.
